Since I told you about the Finnish traditions for Laskiainen on Sunday, I think it is now time for Mardi Gras!
I have celebrated it few times while I lived in the USA, so I figured I would tell a little bit about it too.
Mardi Gras the last big party before the fasting and lent. The general theme for Mardi Gras is "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die".
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating fatty foods before the ritual fasting of lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. As I told you before in English Mardi Gras is sometimes referred to as Shrove Tuesday, or Laskiaistiistai in Finnish.
Popular Mardi Gras traditions include wearing masks and costumes, dancing, sports competitions, parades and over all enjoying yourself before lent. Of course some people take the partying way over the top. Besides drinking a lot, girls flash their boobies to guys for little trinkets like plastic beads and coins.
If you want to dress up for today, I suggest that you wear the traditional colors of Mardi Gras, which are purple, green, and gold. But don't flash your boobies, please!
Mardi Gras festivities have been celebrated in US since late 17th century. While they are not observed nationally throughout the whole United States, a number of traditionally ethnic French cities and regions in the country have big celebrations like in New Orleans, Louisiana.
I won't be partying much today but I will cook up something yummy to celebrate the Mardi Gras! Stay tuned to see what's cooking in my kitchen tonight.
