Good To Know About Deodorants

Hello!

Today I will tell you about health risk that you might not have thought about. I know this is a serious and dull subject to bring up on a Friday but this is important. I was thinking that maybe people will have more time during the weekend to read this post. I didn't know about this until my dear friend told me a year ago. Thank you for caring about my health, Emily!

I'm talking about deodorants and antiperspirants with aluminium and other parabens. There has been several researches that suggest that aluminium and other parabens in underarm cosmetics promote estrogen-dependent tumor growth and cause cancer. Usually this means specifically breast cancer. Note to men; don't think this doesn't concern you because only women have boobs. You have breast as well. They are just smaller than women's breasts (*giggle*).

So, if you start thinking about this, it makes a lot of sense. Most people begin using deodorant when they are teenagers and they keep using it daily. It is a small dose each time but over time the poisonous substances may get deposited in the lymph nodes that we all have in our armpits. Or they could be absorbed to our bloodstream. Also even though it hasn't been completely confirmed that these chemicals cause cancer, we know that they can promote allergic reactions and that is not good for your body either.

Why do I care about this so much? First of all, I sweat. I don't mean girly-girl little sweat. I mean that when I work out, I sweat and it doesn't smell pretty. Second, I once got a terrible sore rash from Adidas antiperspirant that worked very well on my sweat but obliviously it had such poisons in it that it caused my armpits to flare up with allergies. After that I started to look for better deodorants/antiperspirants and that's when Emily told me about the parabens linked to be a cause for cancer. That brings me to a third reason to care. My family is very cancer prone; my dad had a bad type of melanoma (he survived though) and my mom died of lung cancer. I do not want to put any extra bad stuff in my body if I don't have to.

Since I sweat, I don't want to stink so bad. I understand that sweat is normal and after a good work out you need to be sweaty, otherwise you probably didn't do much working out. But I don't want to stink after my walk from home to work. That is why I have been on a hunt for a good deodorant that is more natural and has no aluminium, yet it has to keep the sweat/stink away.

There are lot of organic or so called natural deodorants in the market but most of them don't work well on me. I have been testing different deodorants one after another. I think I have found a good one this time. It is made by Nivea and it is called "Pure and Natural action". It has no aluminium, preservatives or alcohol. I have used it for few days now and I can say that it works pretty ok. I have been biking to work and back, and still don't stink too bad at the end of the day.

This deodorant has a roller and it spreads the liquid evenly. Only bad thing with this deodorant is that since it doesn't have alcohol, it takes a while to dry. So you have to wait few minutes before putting your top on. But that is ok because I know that my sensitive skin feels better if I don't use harsh chemicals on it. Overall thumbs up for Nivea! I will keep testing more deodorants once this one is finished and I will definitely tell you if I find something better.

I hope I got your attention with this post. I didn't want to scare anyone, I just wanted to get everybody thinking about their health. Please tell your friends about this too because I bet you have few pals that don't know about deodorants and their health risks. This way you show your friends that you care about them (*smile*).

Have a good weekend!

  1. also a product to watch for in your personal care:

    crude oil or petroleum

"Both mineral oil and petroleum have the same origins in fossils fuels."

    i like this saying

    • Remember that any creams or cosmetics you put on your skin get absorbed into your blood. Don't put anything on your skin that you couldn't safely eat!
