My Mini Herb Garden

I love to use fresh herbs in my cooking and baking. And since we don't have a balcony or a back yard at our current apartment, I was forced to think of something else to be able to have fresh herbs at home at any given time. I was tired of always buying them from the store.
That is when I though to plant a mini herb garden into a big flower pot. Our kitchen window gets good sunlight in the morning, so the herbs should be ok there. Most of the herbs need appx 5-6 hours of sunligh per day. It is really easy to make a mini herb garden.

You will need:
- big ceramic pot
- soil
- 3-5 herb plants
- water
-fertilizer

First prep the pot and place some little rocks on the bottom of the pot. This way any excess water has a space to escape to. This prevents the roots from rotting. Next put enough soil on top of the rocks that your pot is 3/4 way full. Carefully take out the herbs from their tiny plastic pots that they come in. Place the herbs sturdy upright position in the pot. You can plant 3-5 herbs in the same pot. Herbs are like humans, they like to cuddle up next to each other (*wink*).

Once you have the herbs positioned in the pot, add more soil. You should have soil all the way to the top of the pot because it will sink down a bit once you water your herbs. Then all you have to do is to give the herbs a lot of water for the next couple of days. After that, only water the herbs when needed. Make sure you allow the soil to dry out a little bit between waterings. Also, don't forget to give your herbs fertilizer every couple of weeks.

I have a tiny rosemary plant that I hope will get bigger. Then on the left I have some thyme.

I got to have basil. It taste so good with many of my recipes!

I planted some mint of course.

The trick to keep your herbs growing, is to use them. The more you cut the plants, the more they'll grow, because like humans, they like feeling useful (*giggle*)
That's my mini herb garden. I hope that the sun will shine a little bit more, so that my garden can flourish to its full potential. It has been really gray and rainy in Finland the past couple days. But the snow is almost all gone! Hooray! Summer is upon us very soon...

Have a great Monday!
