Oh my Lord! It is so dark in Finland. The sun supposedly rises at 8.43am and sets at 15.06pm in Kuopio. But I'm not sure if it even does that because it is always so cloudy that we hardly ever see the sun. Like today; it has been raining all day. It is so dark, grey and wet!
I'm seriously starting to think that us Finns are really crazy! Who on earth would like to live in a dark place like this. Someone must be really out of his/her mind to stay here (*giggle*).
Anyway, I have my little survival methods for the dark winter days. Here's a little list of them. I hope they can help you to bring up your energy levels.
Vitamin D (*lots of it*).
I usually buy my vitamin D from the USA. In Finland the dosage is lower than in the USA, so it is easier to take just two soft gels from the USA than a handful of the lower dosage ones from Finland. Even Jinx likes to take vitamin D. He comes around each time he hears me opening the bottle of vitamins.

If the sun is not shining, at least your nails are. I painted my nails last night with this Essie nail polish that I got from my friend Heather (*thanks hun*). The shade is called Scarlett O'Hara. Very pretty!
Delicious Fruit (*yummy*)
I eat a ton of fruit and berries every day. They remind me of sunny days of summer. My favorite fruit the past couple weeks has been persimmon. It is this awesomely sweet fruit that grows on trees around the world. They must be in season right now because our local store has a lot of them and they are on sale (* I have been buying them almost every day*). Persimmon tastes like mango and papaya combined (*almost like candy*) and it is rich in vitamin C as well as beta carotene. I have been eating persimmon with cottage cheese and lingonberries. It makes a great lunch! Cottage cheese gives you protein and calcium, persimmon adds sweetness, vitamins and dietary fiber, and lingonberries taste nice&tarty as well as provide you with a lot of vitamins.
Cute Outfit (*winterize your summer dress*)Last but not least I try to dress up cute even though the weather is total crap.
When you feel good about yourself, the day just seems better as well.
I like to use my summer dresses in the winter as well. I just dress them up with layers, a.k.a winterize them.
For example my today's short sleeved cotton mini dress. It totally reminds me of the warm summer days but I'd freeze my ass if I wore it as it is. However, it works great after I combine it with some extra layers.
First I added sheer patterned pantyhose for the little bit of sexy but I covered most of it with thick and long over the knee wool socks. Secondly I wore a black cardigan over the dress and tied a belt around it to emphasize my waist. Lastly I picked my black high-heeled ankle boots to go with the look. After that I was warm, comfortable and thinking of summer all day long (*smile*).

There you go! My little tricks to cope with the dark winter season in Finland. You could also napping to this list but since it is hard to take naps while at work, I think I'll just stick to these (*giggle*). Cheers!

cute winter update!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm just trying to stay sane. It is really, really dark and depressing here right now. Barely any sun. I guess that would be great if you were a vampire.
