Good evening!
This morning I woke up expecting a lot of pain since it had been over 8 hrs since my last pain killer. I was delighted to realize that my throat wasn't so sore that I had thought it would be. It is sore but not like few times when I have had tonsillitis and I cried every time I swallowed.
I feel pain when I swallow now but it is tolerable, especially with medication. I'm hoping this would be the worst pain I have to handle but I'm prepared for worst. According to all writings about tonsillectomy online (*like this one*), everybody seems to be in serious pain afterwards. Either I don't feel pain or I have been super lucky, or it will hit me soon... I'm wishing for the first two (*giggle*).
I do have a slight headache though, and my ears are hurting, but that's all normal with tonsillectomy. My throat is also swollen and you can see it under my chin because it puffy. I have noticed that ice helps with all that.
If you didn't know, when tonsils are removed, you are left with two open wounds in your throat. There is nothing covering them, so you can see bloody flesh. This morning my wounds were covered up with white jelly-like scabs. Since I knew that the scabs would be there, I wasn't worried. What I didn't know, they taste like ass. You also feel them; it is like you constantly have mucus balled up in your throat. Not fun!
These scabs come out around day 7-10. That is when you can feel severe pain again, as well as be in danger for bleeding. I haven't had any bleeding so far. Not even when I woke up from the surgery. I was thinking I'd taste blood in my mouth but I didn't (*lucky me*).
I have been drinking a lot of ice water. I have a tall glass of it all the time. It is important to keep hydrated because your body needs fluids to recover. Also the scabs need water to keep them wet because if they dry up, it will be painful and you are in the risk of hemorraging. I have also enjoyed popsicles. Everyone always says to eat ice cream but I haven't had a big graving for it. I have had few bowls of it but it has been more like a treat.

This morning I started with fromage frais, bluberries, oats and honey. I let it sit for awhile, so that the oats softened up. Then I slowly ate it to avoid any trouble with the scabs. I tasted good but by lunch time my stomach was creaming for real food. It couldn't understand why I was eating so little and drinking so much water. I usually eat so much more (*breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, snack, dinner and desert*).
Since the doctor had said it is ok to take walks outside, I slowly made my way to the near by store. It felt great to breath in the cold fresh air but I could easily tell that my body is in "recuperating mode" because a slightest hill made me out of breath. Well, I just took it easy and made sure I drank plenty of water after I got back as well as took a nap.
Anyway, the reason why I went to the store was to get baby food. I got whole grain pasta with vegetable-meat sauce. I heated it up a little, added salt and pepper and voilá; a perfect lunch for someone who can't have anything spicy or scrunchy. My belly was so happy! The scabs were also fine because baby food is made so mushy that it did hurt them at all.
That's my first day after tonsillectomy! I was hoping I could invite some friends over to entertain me but then I just read online that you should just stay home and not see anyone because you don't want to catch any germs/bugs. Makes sense because you don't want to be sick while you have two gaping holes in throat. I probably shouldn't have gone to the store...
Have a good night!

:) picturing you slowly walking to the store on your mission to buy yourself baby food... so cute!
ReplyDeletei hope & pray that your scabs heal up well & that there will be little pain & no danger of hemorrhages!
HUGS
I know I like a lot of sweets but I'm also a meat and potatoes kinda of a girl. I need real food. I could cook myself mushy foods too but I'm too lazy to do it since I'm not sure how much I can eat. Baby food jars are so easy!
ReplyDeleteScott's liking that I'm not cooking because he likes really spicy food. I can't eat hot&spicy food even when I'm not sick, so he is loading up on hot peppers and cooking all types of spicy foods right now. :)
No bleeding as of yet! Thanks for your prayers. :)
